Day one!
Welcome to my new and improved blog! About me (an aspiring baker) and my mission to complete all 49 cupcake recipes out of Elinor Klivans cookbook "Cupcakes!" by the end of the year. This means taking time out of my life to complete such a dangerous task (not really). Can I do it, who knows? BUT I will try.
Day: 1
Recipes to go: 48
Today I made Chocolate White Mountain Cupcakes. I was in cupcake heaven! (if there is such a thing). This was an experiment for my sister's bridal shower. She had looked at the cupcake book a few days before the baking process and commanded me to make these. So unwillingly I did.
The Cupcake Police stopped by and thought I was committing a crime by baking such a jump-up-and-down cupcake. That they were SO good that it was against the law, but I set them straight and made them leave. My friend Rosie, was more than happy to help with the process (we both LOVE sugar) and we goofed off in the kitchen (and slipped our fingers into the batter once in a while) The cupcake mixture has something top secret in the recipe to make it moist, I may share it with you sooner or later, but not now. Yet I will share with you what makes the frosting so irresistible. It is a seven minute frosting. Supposedly Elinor said that she reduced it from a twelve to a seven. It contains beating three egg whites with sugar, cream of tartar, and water until your hand falls off. And for flavor a little vanilla and almond extract. And finally, when your candy thermometer hits 160F, you have white peaks of fluffy frosting ready to decorate the most unforgettable cupcakes ever imagined.
After Rosie and I had so beautifully decorated the cupcakes, we decided to take pictures of them. They had mohawks, curly hair, and Elvis-style hair. So I had my mom take pictures of the cupcakes, while we held them up on their tray. As soon as we were done, I turned around and one of the cupcakes on the end fell off! PLOP!! What a fluffy mess! I was a little mad, but it didn't really matter. One cupcake down, 48 more to go!
